Varanasi, traditionally linked to the names of the Varuna and Assi rivers, is an ancient city on the northern banks of the Ganges. Known as Kāśī in ancient texts, it is often referred to as the "City of Light" due to its association with the Sanskrit root "kaś-" meaning "to shine." The city has been a prominent religious and cultural center, with several epithets in Hindu texts, such as Kāśikā and Avimukta. Varanasi is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities and was once the capital of an ancient kingdom. Notable figures like Adi Shankara, Tulsidas, Kabir, and Ravidas contributed to the city's rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
